A star from the “Twilight” movie franchise will be on hand at the annual Harvest Pow Wow at Naper Settlement this weekend.

Chaske Spencer, who stars as werewolf Sam Uley, will sign autographs and greet fans. Spencer is of Sioux descent and is a member of the Fort Peck Reservation. He will represent the non-profit organization United Global Shift.

“He should be a big draw,” said Midwest SOARRING Foundation board president Joseph Standing Bear Schranz. “We’re very pleased to have him. He’s quite popular with the young people. He’s also native. And we wanted to have a wolf preservation platform this year.”

The 18th annual Pow Wow will take place 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 22 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Naper Settlement in Naperville. The event celebrates Native-American heritage with dancing, cultural demonstrations, food and craft vendors, children’s games and crafts and more. (Spencer will be available from 1 to 4 p.m. and again from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 22 and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 23.)

Other highlights include Native-American dancing and drumming, “flintknapping” (arrowhead making), the wolf-dogs from Wolf Mountain Sanctuary (the wolves were the models for the “Twilight” series, Schranz said), and an eagle and other birds of prey from Save Our American Raptors. Musical entertainment will be provided by native flute players and an indigenous group of teen rockers.

“We’ll have many fine vendors and great food vendors,” he said. “We’ll have a Hawaiian group that’s really outstanding. We’re looking forward to them; they’re quite a crowd pleaser.”

Those would be the Hana Hou Hula Hawaiian dancers at 5 p.m. Sept. 22.

“We’ll have a couple teepees up, and we’re going to have an Ojibwa wigwam also,” he said. “We’re adding features every day. We’re really trying to cram pack this with things to do. Plus the value of the Naper Settlement itself, which has all the re-enactors with all their period costumes and houses.”

The Kids’ Corner will be back again, providing children with a chance to create a Native-American craft to take home.
“One of the things we do is a bison tooth necklace with an authentic bison tooth,” Schranz said.

He hopes visitors will not only learn about and appreciate Native-American life and customs, but also learn more about the group’s work with indigenous plants, the environment, bison and cultural education.

“It’s a cultural gathering, but it’s much more than that. It’s bringing people together of all colors and realizing some of the good things and bad things we need to fix,” he said. “It goes to help all of the things that we do.”

Chaske Spencer to be honored for supporting his work creating a positive shift in the lives of many.

New York City, NY (PRWEB) June 13, 2012

Chaske Spencer, star of The Twilight Saga film series: New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn pt. 1 & 2 is to be honored on June 22nd, 2012 at the 6th Annual Shortstack™ Charity Fashion Show, an event open to the public. He is receiving the Barbara Harmon Unsung Hero Award, presented annually to an individual in honor of their contribution to the lives of others. Their selfless service often goes unrecognized, and the Unsung Hero Award is intended to bring light to the work that they do. This award was founded in the memory of Barbara Harmon, an incredible woman who never received nor wanted the credit for the countless hours of community service and for the difference she made in the lives that crossed her own. From working with babies born addicted to drugs, to supporting adolescent youth in her community, to assisting at the World Trade Center disaster, Barbara Harmon embodied the spirit of true heroism.

The 6th Annual Shortstack Charity Fashion Show will be held on Friday, June 22nd, 2012 at the Midtown Loft and Terrace on 5th Avenue in New York City, which overlooks the Empire State Building. Shortstack™ is a teen driven fashion and modeling program whose goal is to allow young girls who do not fit the "normal" model standards to be a part of charitable fashion events. “I am truly excited that Chaske is joining us at this year’s show,” states Olivia Mignone, founder of Shortstack. “We are trying to shift the fashion industry to become more inclusive of all body types, sending a more empowering message of acceptance to society, which is in complete alignment with how he empowers the lives of others.” For years, girls have been rejected from the modeling industry because they are too short. Shortstack was created by teens under the guidance of the non-profit agency Windows of Opportunity, Inc. to give these "short" girls a chance at achieving their dreams as models and empower them to love themselves for who they are.

Spencer, who is of Lakota (Sioux) Nation, Nez Perce, Cherokee, and Creek heritage decent, really appreciates the honor to receive this award at this chic event and feels deeply humbled. “I am so honored to be part of such a great event for a worthy cause,” stated Spencer.

Spencer is a co-founder of the Be the Shift Campaign and spokesperson for United Global Shift (UGS), an organization of which both Spencer and Hal Eisenberg, Executive Director of Windows of Opportunity (WOO) are affiliated. “When I met Chaske at a UGS event and learned of the work he was doing I knew immediately that he was a perfect candidate for this award,” said Eisenberg. “His vision is aligned with WOO on many levels and I see Chaske, myself, and UGS working together on a global level in the near future.” UGS is an organization dedicated to fighting poverty and creating sustainable communities. United Global Shift’s mission is to cause a shift in what is possible for humanity, focusing on the environment, employment, entrepreneurship, health and education by using media outlets to promote entertainment projects in film, television, fashion, sports, advertising, and internet. By promoting these projects the goal is to cause a shift in the way people think and live their lives.

Tickets to the 6th Annual Charity Fashion Show are on sale via Shortstack’s website http://www.wooshortstack.org, with all proceeds going to fund the innovative empowerment programs at Windows of Opportunity, Inc. Information on other sponsorship opportunities are also available on the website.

Chaske Spencer 'Be the Vote' Campaign Video & More!

NCAI Executive Director Jacqueline Pata told the Cherokee Phoenix that “Estimates show that over 1 million eligible Native voters are unregistered. It’s going to take people like Chaske Spencer stepping forward to help spread the word.” She added that, “We hope that Indian Country and non-Native people alike are inspired, especially young people, to get more involved in civic activities such as voting.”

The post to the Native Vote site that shares Spencer’s video also includes “five small things [you can do] that can each make a big difference.” These include registering yourself to vote, urging friends to do the same, and volunteering to be a community coordinator for Native Vote.

Spencer had a big year in 2011, with the release of blockbuster The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part I and festival award-winner Shouting Secrets, and 2012 may shape up much the same, with much-anticipated indie Winter in the Blood in post-production and the Twilight Saga finale due in the fall.

Twilight's Chaske Spencer -- best known as Sam, the leader of Jacob's wolf pack in the franchise -- has boarded the NBC Western drama pilot The Frontier, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.

The project, from writer/exec producer Shaun Cassidy, revolves around a group who follows their dreams and heads West from Missouri across the unchartered country in the 1840s.

Spencer will play Eli, a cook who's traveling with his mentally unstable aunt, Luisa. He's described as an optimist who's trying to be patient with his aunt's real and imagined fears who ventures off with part of group to search for others.

Thomas Schlamme will direct and exec produce the drama, from Sony Pictures Television and Prospect Park.
